این نگرش پس از اولین مصاحبه‌های ترامپ بعد از پیروزی در انتخابات مبنی بر توقف حمایت از شورشیان در سوریه و قدردانی از پوتین برای ارسال نامه‌ای “زیبا” تقویت شده است.
ترامپ اعلام کرده است که در عوض به نیروهای روسی خواهد پیوست و بر شکست داعش متمرکز خواهد شد. وی پیش از این گفته بود که همکاری آمریکا و روسیه با یکدیگر برای شکست داعش را اتفاق خوبی نامیده بود.
این ایده‌ها با نظر ترزا می، نخست‌وزیر بریتانیا که دولت بشار اسد را به جنایت و خشونت متهم کرده و در آینده سوریه جایی برای اسد متصور نیست بسیار در تضاد است.
